Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh

All the older Apatani women in Ziro have plugs through their nostrils (which look like black poker chips) and facial tatoos. This was done to prevent neighboring tribes from stealing their women. I don't have any pictures of this.

I did! We didn't have a guide with us. A few times, at roadside checkpoints, we were asked why we didn't have one. We told them that our guide was meeting us in the next town. Also, we mentioned the name of the travel agency that prepared our permit (you definitely need one of those). People in each town were eager to guide us, probably because it's unusual to travel without a guide in those villages. Keep in mind that this was in 2007, so things might be different now. Good luck!
